For adults planning Halloween

Salt and Pepper

A two-person costume you can make at the kitchen table. Matching black tees, plus a hand-lettered SALT or PEPPER sign hung around each neck. About $28 for both of you.

What you'll look like

Two people in black T-shirts, each wearing a white poster-board sign on a twine loop. One says SALT, the other PEPPER, with shaker-hole dots across the top. It reads from across a room, and the signs lift off when you sit down to eat.

Drawing of two faceless paper-cutout figures in dark T-shirts and trousers, each wearing a white sign on a twine loop around the neck. One sign reads SALT and the other PEPPER, with a row of shaker-hole dots along the top.

What you need (for two people)

Total $27.93

From your closet: dark trousers and shoes. From the junk drawer: scissors and a hole punch.

How to make it

  1. Cut the poster board in half, one sign each.

  2. Letter SALT on one half and PEPPER on the other, big enough to read from across the room. Draw a few dots along the top edge for the shaker holes.

  3. Punch two holes near the top corners of each sign. Thread twine through and tie a loop long enough to slip over your head.

  4. Try it on. Sit, walk, and take it off once. Shorten the twine if the sign hangs too low.

Give yourself three days to get the parts and make it. The build itself is under an hour.

Prices are from Walmart's listings on Oct 7, 2026, for two people, before tax and shipping. We didn't check stock or delivery times. The shirt price covers sizes S–3XL. We haven't built this one ourselves yet.
